Police release video of Virginia Apple store gunman

July 6, 2009 |

Arlington County, Va., police over the weekend provided video footage of an as yet-unidentified gunman who on Friday shot an employee at an Apple retail store in Clarendon, Va.

The surveillance video shows the employee standing at an open back door of the store and the gunman leading the employee off camera. Police reports stated that the employee was shot in the right shoulder, and then another Apple store surveillance video clip shows the gunman exiting through the back door still holding the gun.

The Washington Post and numerous other outlets reported late Friday that the wounded employee was discovered by another Apple employee who heard the shot and then yelled for someone to call 911. A doctor assisted the wounded employee until police arrived, and over the weekend, the 26-year-old Apple store employee was listed as being in "serious but stable" condition at an area hospital.

The motive for the shooting remains officially unclear, but at least one outlet, NBC Washington, reported late Friday that the shooting was part of an attempted armed robbery.

The gunman was described by police as a thin black male in his 20s or 30s, about 5 feet, 7 inches to 6 feet tall. Some outlets quoted police as saying the suspected gunman looked to be wearing a fake beard at the time of the shooting.

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling told the Post that Apple management was "shocked by this senseless act of violence."

"Our thoughts are with this co-worker and her family," Dowling said. "We're working with police to catch the person who committed this act."
